Munirih Sparrow

Sometimes the scariest journey is the one of simply revealing who we truly are. This was precisely the case for Saskatoon musician Munirih Sparrow, who spent the last 15 years avoiding releasing her latest record “Morning to Midnight”, a selection of Baha’i sacred scripture set to music with the warm textures of soul, folk, prayer and devotion.
Under other names and with other groups Sparrow has toured internationally, released 2 records and received national play on CBC. She experienced limited success but kept ignoring the burning desire to sing music of a sacred nature. There was one big problem; she was terrified to speak (sing) about her lifelong religion (the Baha’i Faith), prayer and the big one, GOD.
One weekend during a tour of Alberta, Sparrow realized she felt paralyzed by the pressure to be perfect as a musician and that this pressure had caused her to loose her love of performing. Haunted by the need to release at least one album of sacred material before she quit or died, she pulled out all the stops. She applied for a loan to finance the album, collected the songs she had been secretly composing for the previous five years and flew to Australia to work with producer Louie Shelton (Art Garfunkle, Seals & Crofts, Boz Skaggs).
The album "Morning to Midnight” was born. Finally listening to the promptings of her heart, the doors began to open and the light started seeping into her life. Suddenly the love of music returned to her and she recognized that the world hungers for experiences of the divine wherever it may be found.
“All songs on this album are Bahá’í Sacred Writings. These words help to ignite the spirit and bring people together. With this new record I hope to deepen peoples’ relationship to the word of God and to breathe life into some sorrow laden hearts” says Sparrow.
With the power of a joyful spirit within her, the touring, writing and recording has doubled its speed. She recently completed a three-month tour of the US where she performed 45 shows in 33 cities in 12 states. She is currently embarking on a Canadian-wide tour, writing for next record and planning a UK tour for July 2012.
