Sedona CALLAHAN Photographer

In photographing western landscapes, wildlife and architecture, I hope to tell stories: about the complexities and beauty of the natural world [see Elk at River in Snowstorm and Blizzard in Zion National Park], about the amazing feats of mankind against unforgiving obstacles [see Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde structures] and highlight the gentle beauty that surrounds us if we look closely enough [see Black Horse at Seeley Lake and Reaching for the Sky].

I bring my camera with me to record what I see when I’m out on a hike – a rancher’s draft horse that is as curious about my presence as I am about his; a hummingbird’s nest built low in a tree next to a lightly-traveled trail; a grizzly bear taking a stroll along a path around an alpine lake; a robin ducking under a snow-laden branch to bring a worm to her chicks; or a herd of bison grazing in the foreground of awe-inspiring mountain peaks. Most of my photographs are taken in western United States – Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and New Mexico. Included in my collection are photos from Zion National Park, Glacier NP, Grand Tetons NP, Yellowstone NP, and many forests and protected historic sites.

And to my father, the engineer, whose love for gadgets of all kinds led him to build his own photo enlarger, snag my mother’s metal lasagna pans for chemical washes, and on exceptional evenings invite me into his improvised kitchen-nook darkroom to experience the magic of photo development. I am also grateful to my children, Randy and Monica [both voracious readers] and Lisa [writer and photographer], as well as my grandchildren Christopher, James, Rebekah [photographer], Hayden [writer and photographer], David and Keenan who have provided me with endless opportunities to hone my story-telling skills, and share my love of language and images. And to my husband, Kevin, who has never once rolled his eyes while listening to the oft repeated tales of the love-starved bison or the lone horse in a field of mules.

Clients include Mountain Trails Foundation, Summit County [Utah], Park City Magazine, Summit Applied Anthropology, Wildlife Protection Society, Executive Linguist Agency, Park City Nursery, No Place Like Home. I am a frequent participant in the Park Silly Sunday Market and other open-air markets, and have had numerous private shows in Utah and California. I frequently donate photographs for fund-raising efforts that benefit worthwhile non-profit organizations. My photos hang in collections throughout the United States and the world.
