From the Heart of Texas to the Heart of Africa

Can one individual really make a difference?

After meeting with Mel Chester, an 82 year old American returning from South Africa, the answer is “absolutely."

It’s about living with passion, commitment, dedication and caring for others who are less fortunate than we are.”

It is a matter of priorities, choosing between helping yourself or making sure that people around you have what they need to survive. That is exactly what Mel has done for the last 18 years in Namibia; a country located North West of South Africa with about 2 million people who speak English and where every driver on the road (they drive on the left side of the road) will make you nervous. Once Mel Chester arrived in Namibia and saw the need for his services, he totally forgot his comfortable American life to focus on the people in the heart of Africa.

Photography Is Not Just an Art, It Is Telling a Story

I just liked the mood of the shot – tranquil and lovely.”

Kyoto, Japan © Paul SlaughterKyoto, Japan © Paul SlaughterFor those of you who love to take pictures and may be thinking of photography as a career, look to Paul Slaughter. To say Slaughter loves what he does is an understatement. He has traveled the world and is recognized internationally as a great photographer and has spent the bulk of his adult life capturing the world on film. He has an incredible eye for capturing that special moment. Like the time he spent the morning in a sandy marsh in Spain to get the right light, mood and feel of the moment in a photograph. Slaughter says “Photography is not just an art, it is telling a story and every time you look at the picture you are there once again. My mother, who was from Romania, taught me to love the beauty in life, no matter where you are or what your circumstances. And, I have been very fortunate to do just that.

Living Out Your Dream to Follow Your Heart

Pierre SpierckelPierre Spierckel Pierre Spierckel is doing just that. Born in France and a French man through and through, a published author of young adult books, illustrator / painter / printmaker / bookbinder; Pierre Spierckel has had a great career and done things we may have dreamt about doing, traveled the globe and then some. When you first meet him you are immediately aware that this is a “free spirit”, at once creative, intelligent, a man totally aware of life and its surroundings, yet a very well grounded individual with something to say. And you want to listen. “I was tired of working too much, running too often and late in the end anyway”…says Spierckel. He says “if you’re tired of being bored when you take vacations and do nothing but lay in the sun; and you are looking for ways of discovering countries and their people; of moving without hurry and really seeing things…landscapes, monuments, cities in an original way, then here is my solution. Find a mate who has the same taste; buy a river boat in The Nederlands. Andre Takes You Around the Planet: 249 Countries Visited

"One People One Planet" - Andre Brugiroux"One People One Planet" - Andre BrugirouxBest-selling author, André Brugiroux, who European newspapers have dubbed “the Marco Polo of modern times” in his book entitled   “LA TERRE N'EST QU'UN SEUL PAYS"  describes his epic journey of discovery and adventure through 135 countries around the world and 400,000 km over an 18 year period. The book is now printed and available in English by Oneworld (UK) under the title: ‘ONE PEOPLE, ONE PLANET.”

At the age of 17,  Brugiroux left Paris with 10 francs in his pocket to realize a childhood dream of touring the world : not as a tourist, but rather as a student of mankind. After some years in Europe where he learned five languages, and in Canada to arrange financing, Brugiroux set out to re-discover the world.

While living on not much more than a dollar-a-day, Brugiroux hitchhiked (on every conceivable type of transportation) for six years.  Over land and sea from North America, end to end, to the Pacific Islands; The Far East, Trans-Siberia, the Middle East, India, Iran and all of Africa!

Combining Computer Science With Percussions

Hear the Sun!

Marty QuinnMarty Quinn turning data into Music
Turning data into Music. Why music? Not only do we love music, but it just so happens that music is composed of a very rich palette of qualities upon which data may be mapped and thereby perceived by the brain through the auditory channel. Music stimulates cognition and memory, and offers those who are blind or visually handicapped the opportunity to understand information and gain knowledge in new ways. By working with scientists who are shedding new light on our world, and the museums and centers who are helping to disseminate it, we seek to create innovative, pleasurable and accessible audio information presentation solutions for the public to "get it" by hearing. Whether online or live, our work makes science accessible to more people, and maybe, just maybe, its like listening to the music of the spheres.
