A Spiritual Journey into the World of Art

A Spiritual Journey into the World of Art

Our much anticipated interview with one of the most exciting and talented artists of our time was upon us, Ivan Lloyd opened the door and with his humble generosity ushered us in.  Excitement came hunting us as we walked into his home, a lovely house surrounded by the mystical mountains of Tucson in Arizona. I apologized we were a bit late, and Ivan smiled saying that’s okay, I am very happy to see you. Ivan had mixed up a bunch of fruit and soda to offer us as we started conversing. He was so peaceful and eager to talk. His twelve year old son, Hashme came to say 'hello' and started cutting cake while his little sister was taking a nap.

His warmth and down to earth attitude made us feel at ease as the conversation started around the Arts.  Ivan said with a clear voice “It is a gift of God and it is to each one of us to take it and cultivate it. Everyone is an artist but many people are unaware. It is not a question of being talented but of temperament, selfishness and the ability to focus on your muse more than anything else.” We all agreed… “Only people who want something badly or enjoy something immensely and know how to concentrate on it will succeed and be themselves.”

Have You Hugged a Tree Today?

Richard St Barbe BakerRichard St Barbe BakerThe assumption that the "good life" requires more individual consumption, constant meat-eating, larger homes and vehicles, and disposable everything will need to fade.  A spirit of shared and equitable material sacrifice can replace it - with no loss of what really matters, such as active good health, strong communities, and time with family.

The Earth's soil and vegetation can remove billions of tons of carbon from the atmosphere. Agricultural landscapes can accomplish this while improving food and fiber production and minimizing the need for artificial fertilizer and fossil-fuel-driven tilling and raising farmer incomes  (Worldwatch, January, 2009.)

Richard St. Barbe BakerRichard St. Barbe BakerRichard St. Barbe Baker, was among the first conservationists to tell the world about the importance of conservation and its effect upon humanity and global warming. In 1954, St. Barbe wrote: "When the trees go, the rain goes, the climate deteriorates, the water table sinks, the land erodes and desert conditions soon appear".

At the tender age of four, Richard St. Barbe Baker planted his first tree.  St. Barbe was born in 1889 and lived until 1982 and spent his entire life teaching conservation.  His father was an evangelical minister and loved gardening and was instrumental in teaching St. Barbe the skill to grow gardens and trees and from the pine forests near his home he developed his love for nature and the beauty of the forests. “In his travels around the world, he became known as the “Man of the Trees”… source from “Man of the Trees” printed by Ecology in Action, 1989.

Because Coffee and Milk Have No Prejudice

Because Coffee and Milk Have No Prejudice

Being so fascinated by the city of Budapest, I found myself asking the question: How’s Hungary doing today?  Ajang Farid said "You know, we live in a small country but we are very active.  We are a large group of people of all ages getting together very often trying to bring change. Projects are lining up on the table one by one. The youth is very much involved in producing videos."

Dr. Ajang FaridDr. Ajang Farid“Yes, I am one of the producers of the videos. We are excited about this project and making films. One of them is about our friends who have been imprisoned in Iran because of prejudice. Our thought was to create a short video for the Hungarian media so they can use it directly in TV programs whenever the persecution of the Faith in Iran is mentioned. We also wanted to send a message to the friends in Iran that a small community in a small European country (Hungary) is thinking of them, and feels motivated to serve the Cause the more the friends in Iran are persecuted. We hope that the message got through. You can watch the video below. We are currently working on more videos.”

Singing in a Choir is Music to Your Heart

Have you ever wondered what it would take to establish, maintain and develop a local choir, provide it with music, and with opportunities to perform?

Ludwig is actively engaged as a composer, music producer, educator, writer, and speaker.

The booklet is designed to help communities establish and manage their own choir.  Ludwig says: “The human voice is perhaps the most basic and magical of musical instruments, and choral singing is inherently both an artistic and a social activity. These common features make the process of creating and maintaining a choir remarkably consistent in cultures around the world.”

When asked how important is music to the development of a community? Ludwig replied, "Singing in a choir is one of life's most joyful and rewarding experiences. Making music together is a wonderful way to build communities.  It brings hearts together in unified effort.  It builds friendships and a sense of belonging.  It immerses us in a shared artistic experience that lifts our spirits while subtly teaching us about many spiritual truths.  To have such an activity is a major social and spiritual asset.”

Education in Small Steps and Full Circles

It was my privilege to meet and know Makhosazana Fletcher a few years ago when I was working on a play that I had taken from a wonderful book “God Loves Laughter” by William Sears.

Makhosazana and Steven FletcherMakhosazana and Steven FletcherShe and her husband Steven Fletcher were a part of the cast when the play was presented in San Clemente, California.  I sensed then that she was no ordinary human being.  In January of 2009, Makhosazana traveled to Swaziland on behalf of Micro Steps an educational organization with a philosophy based on the belief that every human being is precious and has great potential. That the job of education is to uncover or "draw forth" that potential.  Quoting from the Micro Steps philosophy, “We believe that school is a part of education, but that education is far more than school alone. The world has many needs. True education can create citizens with vision, parents with vision and this will lead to children with vision.”

Micro Steps believes “…that giving is a natural act (as is receiving) but that all too often the giving of charity creates unintended side effects. We feel that if the right atmosphere is created, both the giver and the recipient of a gift will be uplifted. This is our approach, this is the work we have undertaken and we hope you will join us in your own ways.  “We have chosen education as a place to invest small amounts of money in well considered ways”

When Giving and Receiving Are Viewed As One

We probably all remember the "Peace Prayer" of St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) by an anonymous Norman c. 1915 A.D. The prayer goes like this "Lord make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, Let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, truth; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, Joy. O Divine Master grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled As to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life."

Unleashing the Power of Detachment through Self Mastery by Cal Feldman.Unleashing the Power of Detachment through Self Mastery by Cal Feldman."We cannot attain Peace without first changing ourselves says Cal Feldman, today humanity is suffering as a result of its severe attachment to material existence with little concern for deeper meaning of life’s purpose.  As a result, we witness a fragmented humanity – both individually and collectively – unable to realize its true nature.  However, at a closer look, we discover that many of us travel along parallel paths of attachment and detachment, moving between these two as we encounter many of the trials and tribulations (tests) that we face in the course of our development towards self-mastery. Eventually, we achieve our purpose and enter the gate of Divine Oneness – returning to our true home with the completion of our journey here on Earth.”

Making a Film to Give People Hope

Justin de Leon with children in the PhilippinesJustin de Leon with children in the Philippines Just recently, Treasures of Wonderment had the opportunity to converse with filmmaker and Director Justin de Leon; who is, along with assistance from Noel Chacha, embarking on a full length documentary film. Being a student of poverty and conflict, Justin de Leon constantly asks himself: What can I do to positively affect the lives of those in need? How best can I be an agent of change?

Looking for ways to impact those around the world while living here in the United States has been a challenge for Justin who believes that he is not the only one wrestling with the same question. The topic of charitable giving and foreign aid to Africa has long raised controversy, pitting skeptics against idealists and pairing rock stars with politicians, creating images both true and inaccurate. The chief question that will underscore this film will be how we here in the US most effectively help improve the lives of those in Africa.  The film will also shine a light on the misperceptions of charitable giving and foreign aid while offering people hope and exploring pathways for success.
