July 11th, 2009 - BAHA'I TRIAL IS DELAYED BY A FEW DAYS

Stop the Persecution of Bahá'ís

Iran Press Watch has been able to confirm that trial is delayed.

We call on the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to release these seven innocent Bahá'ís immediately. They face trial in Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court in Iran. Why? Just because they are Bahá'ís. This is part of a concerted campaign by the Iranian regime to extirpate the Bahá'í community from Iran altogether. If the government of Iran refuses to release them, a public trial should be held that respects international norms of jurisprudence. We ask the international community and non-governmental organizations and all defenders of human rights to make the same plea to the government of the Islamic Republic.

Seven leaders of the Bahá’í faith held in prison for more than a year without charge.Seven leaders of the Bahá’í faith held in prison for more than a year without charge.Cherie Blair QC – one of the United Kingdom’s leading human rights lawyers and wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair – is calling for Iran to ensure that seven leaders of the Bahá’í faith – held in prison for more than a year without charge or access to their legal counsel – be given a fair trial and a chance of justice.

Watch below an excerpt from the UK's Channel 4 News on 18th February 2009 where the Iranian Nobel Prize-winning human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi talked to the programme about the plight of the Bahá'ís in Iran, the impending trial of the 7 Iranian Bahá'ís falsely charged of spying for Israel, as well as human rights violations in general and how difficult it is to do her work.
